Adorable Yarn Wrapped Cardboard Tube Snowman Craft

Are you snowman-obsessed this time of year? I sure am! They’re adorable and make cute decorations in the winter. We recently shared a fun snowman painting with a unique technique, today we are sharing an adorable yarn wrapped cardboard tube snowman craft. It’s a great winter boredom buster for elementary aged kids and tweens.

Yarn Wrapped Cardboard Tube Snowman Craft

Supplies Needed:

• white yarn
• cardboard tube (cut a paper towel tube or use a tp tube)
• scissors
• glue
• empty and clean k cup (coffee pod or similar)
• buttons
• washi tape (optional)
• pom poms
• pipe cleaners
• black craft foam
• googly eyes

Instructions:

Start at one end of your cardboard tube and start wrapping the yarn. Tuck the tail so that you wrap over it, securing it as well as hiding the loose end. Continue to wrap around the cardboard tube until you are about an inch from the end. Cut the yarn.

Use a piece of washi tape to wrap around the tube covering the loose end. If you left an inch without string, there should be enough room for 2 pieces of the tape. I also wrapped a piece on the opposite end (that I started with) to make sure the yarn stays put (half the tape on the outside and half the tape on the inside).

Find something with a small pointing/sharp tip such as a safety pin or thumbtack. Poke a hole on both side where the arms will be placed. Take a k cup and poke a hole on both sides. This is where you will be inserting the earmuff pipe cleaner. Make one last hole for the carrot nose on the front.

Cut 2 pieces of a pipe cleaner for the stick arms. I made a ‘V’ shape at the ends of ours. Poke them threw the arm holes you just made; one on each side. Inside the cardboard tube, flip the pipe cleaner ends upwards to secure them in place. Now your snowman has arms! You can shape them and move them however you’d like.

Next, take a second empty k cup/coffee pod and place it over the end with the 2 rows of washi tape. It should fit right over it. Grab the 1st k cup with the holes you made earlier. Cut a small piece of a pipe cleaner to make the earmuffs (ours is light blue). Poke one end through a side hole and the other end in the opposite side hole. On the inside of the k cup, flip the ends upwards to assure the earmuffs stay put.

Cut a tiny orange pipe cleaner to create the carrot nose. Bend the piece in half to make it thicker and place in the nose hole you made earlier. Flip the ends sideways on the inside so the nose stays in place. Now it’s time to add the head to the second k cup attached to the snowman’s body! The use of two k cups allows kids to be able to twist and turn the head for pretend play.

Add pom poms where the ears would go (if snowmen had ears…haha),  buttons and a coal mouth made from teeny tiny craft foam. The craft foam we used had a sticky back but gluing should also work. Don’t forget to add a scarf! We twisted two different colored pipe cleaners together and then wrapped it around the tube just below the k cup. Twist where the two ends meet.

That’s it! Display in the home somewhere or let the kids play with it as they wish. Little Sister pretend plays with it and her stuffed penguins. She loves it and has told me so many times already! Unlike Christmas decorations, you can keep this one up all winter long!
