Have you seen all those adorable Diaper Wipes Cases that are covered in fabric? I have been wanting to make one for the longest time! I had a blue travel wipes case and am now having a girl, so I knew this would be the perfect 1st mommy made project for her. You can also use one of those Huggies wipes travel dispensers.
I made do with what I had around the house and found this old tank top (an old fave!) to use.
I turned the tank top inside out and traced the wipes case (open position) lightly with a marker. Make sure that you leave enough room for the edges. This tank top is 2 different layers of material, so I pinned it before I cut it out. It does not have to be cut perfect since the edges will be covered in fabric.
Next, I used Quilt Batting to cover the top & bottom of the case with hot glue. No need to do the edges for this part. The quilt batting was super thick, so I tore it into 2 thinner pieces.
For this next step, you start at one of the front edges (do the sides last). Put a little bit of hot glue on and then place one edge of the fabric on keeping in mind that you don’t want it too close to the edge & definitely not over hanging (it will not snap shut otherwise). Next, wrap the fabric around to the back end and hot glue in place there. Stretch the fabric to the front, bottom end and cut off any excess fabric before gluing in place. Finish by gluing down the sides. You may want to trim the corners a little before gluing in place.
Now for the ribbon! I used a thicker, brown ribbon 1st. I hot glued it in a strip going around the case vertically- I have also seen it placed horizontally. Then, I glued a smaller, off-white ribbon over the top of that. Around the edges, I used a smaller brown ribbon. Make sure to glue just a little bit at a time so it doesn’t dry up on you and again, keeping away from the very edge (no overhanging). I did ribbon around all the edges, but next time I am going to leave it off in the back. Instead, do a U-turn with the ribbon when you get to the back corners.
I bought some pastel-colored flowers from Michael’s using a 50% off coupon and embellished the case by hot gluing 2 of the flowers on top of the wider ribbon. One flower is slightly bigger than the other. I finished by gluing a tan button in the center of the flower.
The finished diaper wipes case – I love how it turned out!
