Cute Books for Kids Who Love Dogs – New Releases
Like many young kids, Little Sister’s favorite animal has always been dogs. We are always happy to read books together as a family where the main character is a dog. In this post we are sharing four brand new books for kids who love dogs: The Best Days Are Dog Days, Pretty Minnie in Hollywood, Douglas, You Need Glasses!, and From Wolf to Woof. These four books are great for preschoolers through early elementary aged.

The Best Days are Dog Days
by Aaron Meshon
for ages 3-5 years
A little girl and her pet French bulldog are the perfect playmates in this all-day outdoors adventure!….Because when every day’s a dog’s day, every day is the best day . . . especially when you can spend it with the person you love.
– Penguin Random House
Little Sister (5) said she likes this book a lot and Big Brother enjoys reading it to her. The illustrations are fun and playful so it’s no surprise to me that she asks to read it all the time. She gets her big stuffed animal dog to act out all the posed on the inside covers – too cute! Little Sister also said that she especially likes the part where the dog describes his food as, “Minty” and “Beefy!”
Pretty Minnie in Hollywood
by Danielle Steel
for ages 3-7
From mega-bestselling author Danielle Steel comes an adorable new children’s picture book featuring her very own Chihuahua!
Lights, camera, adorable! Pretty Minnie is back, and it’s her big break when she visits the glitz and glamour of Hollywood! Whether sightseeing with her best friend, taking a dip in the fancy hotel pool, or having a costume fitting at the movie studio, Minnie’s star quality shines as she becomes everyone’s favorite motion-picture pup. This dazzling tale will have young readers shouting, “Hooray for Hollywood!”

I’m excited to share this picture book with you written by Danielle Steel. Minnie is actually the name of her pet chihuahua in real life. I absolutely love the adorable illustrations, sparkly front cover and the fonts used for the title. This book is perfect for younger kids who enjoy imaginative play. Minnie is dressed in many different outfits to correspond with the scenes in the movie she ends up starring in.
From my 5 year old: I liked it a lot and thought it was great! Minnie looks pretty. I didn’t like the mean dog until she said bye in a nice way.
Douglas, You Need Glasses!
by Ged Adamson
for ages 3-7
Meet Douglas, a dog with a big problem: he needs eyeglasses but doesn’t know it, and his bad eyesight tends to land him in some pretty hairy situations. Both kids and parents will laugh out loud—and may even recognize themselves!
– Penguin Random House
Our family thought this story was funny! Right from the very beginning where Douglas thinks he is chasing a squirrel which is really a leaf blowing in the wind. Eventually Nancy takes him to the eye doctor to get his vision checked. He’s given an eye test where he has to tell the doctor what he sees in a series of pictures. This part is sure to have the kids giggling with his funny facial expressions and not right answers. In the end, Douglas is able to see things clearly making getting glasses seem not scary and worth it.
I think it’s awesome that the last two pages feature photos of real kids wearing glasses. To celebrate this book’s publication, Penguin Random House would like to encourage you to tag them on Twitter sharing pictures of your kids wearing glasses using the hashtag #douglasyouneedglasses.
From Wolf to Woof
by Hudson Talbott
for ages 5-8
How did dog become man’s best friend? Hudson Talbott takes readers on a fascinating journey through history to see how wolves’ relationships with humans sparked their development into the dogs we know and love today.
– Penguin Random House
Both my kids enjoyed this book. Big Brother said he learned interesting things from it. The illustrations were engaging for Little Sister and she loved following the story of the boy and dog learning to play fetch. I thought it was a great story about teamwork and how everyone benefits if you work together.
