Pom Pom Penguin + My Penguin Osbert Kids Book
Have you read the book titled My Penguin Osbert by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel? It’s an adorable Christmas story about a little boy who asks Santa for a penguin for Christmas. My now 7 year old’s favorite animal since he was a toddler is penguins. Check out the cute little pom pom penguin craft we made for him to add to his collection!
About the book, My Penguin Osbert:

I bought this book for his 7th birthday because I knew he would love it. He has a whole collection of penguins that he plays with regularly and would definitely love having his own real one!
A little boy named Joe is writes his letter to Santa like he does every year. Except this year he is more specific asking for what he wants since there have been misunderstandings in the past. For example, one year he really wanted a trampoline so he described it in the letter. Santa misunderstood and brought him a pogo stick instead. This year, he was very careful to write how he would like a pet penguin and included a drawing.
Santa brings him his own, real penguin named Osbert and Joe finds learns ‘Be careful what you wish for’ when things don’t go how he imagined. Osbert wants to do all the things that penguins do so Joe has to do things like eat herring with seaweed jam for breakfast. They go to visit the Antarctic World at the zoo and realize that is where he belongs.
I definitely recommend the book for preschoolers through elementary-aged kids.
Make Your Own Pom Pom Penguin Pet
To go along with the book, we made our very own Osbert using pom poms. The pom poms were part of an Ultimate Fuzzy Kit that we received free from CraftProjectIdeas.com/Horizon Group. Their products are available for purchase at Walmart.
Supplies:
– 2 jumbo black pom poms
– 1 white pom pom
– googly eyes
– orange or yellow craft foam or felt
– black craft foam/construction paper/felt
– scissors
– glue or glue dots
Instructions:
Use glue or glue dots to attach the black pom poms together (1 on top of the other). I find that glue dots work better with fuzzy craft supplies.
Cut the white pom pom in half. Glue one of the halves as the penguin’s tummy.
Glue on the googly eyes.
Cut a beak and feet from either yellow or orange craft foam. Glue in place.
Make black wings. Glue on to the sides.
