Outer Space Discovery Bottle
Ready for another creative preschool theme? Today’s focus is on outer space. There is something so fascinating about it that both my kids can’t seem to get enough of learning about it! One of their faves was when we did a super fun constellations learning week. We covered all things STEAM in that post so for this week’s focus, we decided to change it up to a fun activity – an outer space discovery bottle!
This sensory/discovery bottle can be made several different ways. Not only is it mesmerizing for little ones to watch, it also provides a calming effect. Read on to see how we made our version.
Supplies Needed:
- plastic bottle
- glitter glue
- glitter – fine glitter and/or regular
- food coloring
- water beads or similar for representing the planets
Optional embellishments: star beads, pony beads, foam stickers of stars, aliens, spaceships
*We receievd the beads, sequins, star stickers, sequins, glitter, and glitter glue free via CraftProjectIdeas.com You can purchase their products at Walmart stores. Look for ‘Horizon Group’ on the packaging.
Outer Space Discovery Bottle Instructions
Fill the plastic bottle with warm-hot water leaving a gap at the top. Add your glitter glue. We had both small bottles and glitter glue pens. The small bottle was a sparkly white. Have your child squirt a generous amount into the bottle. Little Sister also added a small amount from her purple and silver glitter glue pens. Mix for a few minuted.
Add 1-3 teaspoons of fine glitter (or use regular glitter). Add a drop or two of food coloring. We used blue for our discovery bottle. I accidentally overdid it and added too many drops. This made it hard to see what was inside. In an effort to fix this, I dumped out half of the blue water and replaced with clear water.
Add your beads, fine glitter, stars, etc. Now the fun part – shake it or flip upside-down and back again! It’s hard to see in the photos, but you could see the stars and beads swirling around in it. The water was still a bit too dark too see the planets though (water beads), but we were still able to see them if we looked hard enough!
