Darling Plastic Heart Shaped Penguin Ornaments For Kids To Make
We love penguins! Both my kids have been penguin obsessed since they were toddlers. Every year we try to make a few handmade ornaments to hang up on the tree. This year we decided to decorate clear, plastic ornaments into darling heart shaped penguin ornaments. Pair these ornaments with the popular Mr. Popper’s Penguins book or movie to make it a fun penguin themed day!

Supplies:
- clear plastic heart ornaments
- paint *see instructions section for recommendations
- paintbrushes
- permanent marker (optional)
- string/cord/ribbon for hanging
Instructions:
Open the plastic heart ornament and place the 2 halves with the flat side down. Lightly sketch a heart shape for the penguin’s face area using a washable marker. You can either use the ornament as two separate [half] ornaments or together as one fillable ornament. (add a sweet surprise inside!)
*For this type of paint project, I prefer to use Enamel paints. These do not wash out, so may not be the best for little ones (fine for upper elementary aged children). When dry, it looks nice with a bit of a shine and doesn’t easily chip off. Alternatively, if doing this project with younger kids under 7, using acrylic paint will still stick the the plastic but can easily scratch, etc. I recommend using a sealant to help with this and make it shine. (such as this sealant or this)
Paint the outer heart with black and the inside heart with white. Do as many coats as needed with drying time in between. Let dry completely.
We decided to one with the face on the outside and one with it on the inside. Add an orange beak with paint or a permanent marker. Draw or paint on eyes. Alternatively, use googly eyes.
Paint with a clear sealant. Add string or an ornament hanger through the tiny hole at the top of the heart.
If you’d like, add a bow tie using ribbon with Glue Dots or hot glue.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins
Both my kids loved the movie Mr. Popper’s Penguin! They used to watch it over and over when they were younger.
It’s the classic story of a job being put above all else, including the kids. The penguins bring them closer and help him (Jim Carey) to see things in a new light. It’s sweet, funny and touches morals/doing what’s right. → Get the movie here.
Have you read the book version of Mr. Popper’s Penguins? Once my son was older, I purchased the book for him. It was one of the first chapters books he read that had a lot of words.
Big Brother thinks it’s a funny story and gives it 5 stars. Little Sister is currently reading it.
