Preschool Activities: 3D Flower Art
Today’s creative preschool learning theme is flower activities! Whether incorporating math, dissecting a flower, exploring creativity through process art, and more – be sure to check out what our preschool friends did for this theme at the end of the post. For our preschool flower theme, we did an activity that I did with Big Brother when he was a toddler. We made 3D flower art!
Little Sister had fun exploring different painting techniques, then we turned the finished painting into artwork.
How to make the 3D Flower Art
Supplies Needed:
- paint
- items to paint with (q-tips, sponges, cardboard tubes, and so on)
- sturdy paper
- scissors
- glue
- flower cookie cutter (optional)
- marker, pencil, or similar shape for curling the flower petals
Instructions:
Get out all your paint supplies including different things to paint with – no paintbrushes allowed…tee, hee! Have your preschooler paint however they’d like to create a patterned paper. Some of the items Little Sister used were q-tips, a loofah wrapped around cardboard, a fork, and fingerprints.
She also used a paper towel tube cut in sections. She stamped circles with it and on one piece, I cut slits which I then bent. It ended up resembling a flower when stamped. When I looked over at Little Sister’s painting, she had put circles inside all of the cut cardboard tubes prints she had made – too funny!
I asked her to make a pattern on another sheet which she had so much fun doing. She sang/hummed the entire time she painted while giggling. I think it’s safe to she she loved this art project!
Little Sister also made a flower art scene using a cookie cutter. I love the way it looks!
After all the kid-made patterned papers were dry, we used the cookie cutter to trace flower shapes on the back side. She is old enough to do the tracing by herself. Younger preschoolers may need your help – try doing hand over hand! We traced both inside and outside/around the cookie cutter.
Once the flowers are cut, use a pencil (or similar) to curl the flower petals. Glue them on to a sheet of colored paper. Try stacking the smaller ones on top of the bigger ones. To give our flowers even more depth, we added a folded strip of paper (accordion fold) in between the flower and paper and in between the bigger and smaller flowers.
Now it’s ready to hang up in your home reminding you that Spring is on it’s way!
