Chinese New Year Lantern Craft for Kids
Every year we end up making fun crafts for Chinese New Year and celebrating by having a kid-friendly party with one of my son’s best friends. I love that it helps him learn about a culture that is different from his and about the different things his friend partakes in. In the past we have made things like dragon crafts, Chinese drums, lanterns, canvas art, and more. It has been a couple years since we made a lantern so this year we made another one and it is my favorite one yet!
Supplies Needed:
- empty baby food jar
- Mod Podge
- red tissue paper
- scissors
- paintbrush
- gold glitter glue
How to make the Chinese Lantern Baby Food Jar Craft
First cut red tissue paper into small squares. Turn the baby food jar upside down and paint it with the Mod Podge.
Place the red squares on and then paint the Mod Podge over the top. Let dry for awhile.
Use a gold glitter glue stick to write Chinese New Year’s characters on your lantern. We wrote Good Fortune/Luck. A simple search on the web for Chinese New Year character sayings should bring up many to choose from and some even show how to write them.
The lanterns are usually red which symbolizes good fortune. The color and message written on each expresses wishes for the new year. A Lantern Festival is held on the last day marking the end of the new year festivities. Some lanterns are artistic and can be animal shaped or contain a riddle.
