Shark Surfboard Craft for Kids
Shark Week is coming up at the end of this month, are you ready to learn all about these amazing creatures? My kids love watching it on the Discovery Channel. To kick things off this year, we are sharing a fun project to make with the kids – a shark surfboard craft! We teamed up with five of blogging buddies to bring you even more shark activities which can be found at the end of the post.
Shark Surfboard Craft Instructions
Supplies Needed:
- cereal box or cardboard
- scissors
- kid-friendly paint
- paintbrush
- markers
Cut a cereal box or regular box so that it lays flat. Lightly sketch a surfboard outline on the cardboard. Cut around the outline.
Sketch a shark fin based on the size of the surfboard. On the flat side of the fin (opposite the point from the triangle), I drew a thick upside-down letter ‘T’. I cut around the now funky-looking shark fin and then folded the sides of the ‘T’ inwards (after folding it should look like a lowercase ‘l’ attached to a fin-shape). On the bottom of the surfboard, I cut a slit equal to the size of that folded part – parents or an older sibling should do this part. Stick this through the slit and then on the opposite side, unfold the flaps. Then just squish the flaps (sides of the ‘T’) flat and tape them to the surfboard to secure in place.
We made one with a tail and one without.
Cover the table with newspaper or another way and set the surfboards, paint and paintbrushes on top of it. Have the kids paint the surfboards. My kids wanted gray sharks like the real ones. After 2 coats and some drying time, they were ready to be decorated.
For inspiration, we looked at shark clipart. Both my kids use this simple trick when they aren’t exactly sure how they want something go look or want it to look exactly like something (like the Shopkins characters!). Draw on the features with markers.
Little Sister wanted me to decorate hers so we decided on an idea of a shark bite in the side of the surfboard turned into a side-view of a shark. She also wanted waves which I drew at the bottom of the board so it looked like the shark was coming out of water. After looking at surfing phrases, I decided to write ‘Killer Waves’ since it seemed fitting…haha!
Now they each have fun shark surfboards to play with!

They look like they would make great bookmarks, too!
Thanks for the idea! We’ve been using the shark bite one to eat all of Little Sister’s stuffed animals. She has a blast trying to get them away in time 😀
Hey Amanda, these look really fun! My friends kids would really love these sharks, they’re obsessed with sharks at the moment. Thanks for the fun craft tip.
