Paper Plate Animals: Turtle Craft and Scissors Practice
Little Sister has been loving using a scissors lately! She is still learning how to use one and has been busy practicing cutting pieces of paper. A lot of times she will grab a sheet of construction paper and cut away. Other times, I will cut her long strips for her to hold and cut squares. We have a ton of little pieces (and big!) lying around so we decided to use some of them to make paper plate animals. Up first is a paper plate turtle craft that involves lots of cutting, pasting, painting, and creativity – perfect for preschoolers!
Paper Plate Turtle Craft and Scissors Practice Activity
Supplies Needed:
- paper plate – any size
- construction paper
- kids scissors
- glue
- sequins
- googly eyes
Instructions:
Have the child cut strips of construction paper. Then have them cut those into smaller pieces (squares/rectangles). My daughter choose pink and yellow construction paper for her turtle shell.
Glue the pieces to the back side of a paper plate. I gave my daughter a dessert-sized plate that has a rim around it – versus the thinner kind that don’t have a defined rim like you see in our photos.
Glue sequins around the edge. We used the green and gold ones that Horizon Group sent us for free. They come in different sizes and can be purchased at Walmart. The material of the month on their website this month is SEQUINS. Head on over to see more shiny fun!
The other day, Little Sister was doing an open-ended painting activity. She had used green paint colors including a sparkly one. I decided to turn her painting into artwork by making the turtle’s head, legs, and tail from it. I love how the glittery paint and shiny sequins make it look so girly. She loved it too and excitedly asked to make a ‘doggie’ too, so now we will have a whole paper plate animals series on the blog. So fun! I’m looking forward to hearing which animals she picks to make.
The last thing we did was add googly eyes to the turtles head.
