Decorating Easter Eggs with Kids {Creative Challenge}
My kids and I have been busy decorating Easter eggs. We made all kinds of fun character eggs and used many different techniques for decorating them. We also took part in the #CreativeKidsChallenge hosted by Tinkerlab. The challenge is open to anyone who would like to participate! You do not need to be a blogger as there are many different ways to share your creation.
The objective of the challenge is to let the kids be the inventors and should be a child-led process to the end result. The theme for this month’s challenge is eggs – whether you use real eggs or fake ones. You can get the full details here. Rachelle also gives examples of possible ideas such as doing a science experiment or making an egg sculpture.
I bought the plastic white eggs from Walmart. They come in a carton with a mini egg dye kit including patterned cardboard rings to set them on to dry. I set up our craft table with all kinds of art supplies and challenged them to use as many of the items they could to create their designs.

Here are the art supplies and other things I set up for them:
- Different kinds of glue (glitter, Elmer’s, and Mod Podge)
- Paint, paintbrushes, and a sponge stick
- Plastic cups, egg dipper, food coloring (+ vinegar out of reach)
- Kids-safe scissors and a cute pair of bunny tongs (Walmart)
- Dot markers and permanent markers in various colors
- Different kinds of stickers, temporary tattoos, and scratch art stickers
- Sequins, gems, pom poms, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, buttons, and a few purple feathers
- Tissue paper (which they didn’t end up choosing – use with Mod Podge to decoupage eggs)
The 1st thing they wanted to do was dye an egg with food coloring. They ended up not liking the vinegar smell so only chose to dye one each. Little Sister asked if she could please paint an egg which she chose to make pink. They both also painted with the sponge stick. Only place a small amount on and dab some of it off if you want it to have a sponge-painted look. My son did 2 colors at the same time which I thought looked pretty.
Both used stickers and temporary tattoos of choice to decorate some of their eggs. Big Brother colored his foam stickers using the permanent markers. Little Sister always wants to do the same things as him, so she made smiley faces on them with the markers. I like the way the scratch art stickers look on the bigger plastic eggs.
Aren’t these speckled Easter eggs super pretty? I am loving the way they turned out and it wasn’t even my idea! I asked them the day before how they wanted to decorate their eggs besides painting/using egg dye. My son said he wanted to use his Sprayza markers which I never would have thought to use. I was so excited because I knew they were going to look awesome.
The Sprayza kit is easy for kids to use. There is a black thing that is hollow on the inside like a straw which you blow through. At the opposite end, there is a place to snap a marker on. When you blow throw the top, it sprays the tip of the marker giving it a spray painted look. Here is a photo of my son’s artwork using the stencils provided in the kit.
Little Sister asked me to make her a “doggie” egg. The ears are made from pink craft foam. We added googly eyes and I drew a face on with a permanent black marker.
Big Brother wanted to make an animal too but didn’t know what to make. To inspire him, I placed 2 pom poms on an egg and asked him what it looked like. He chose to turn it into a mouse. He used a sequin for the nose, a pipe cleaner for the tail, and googly eyes.
They both also made funny egg characters using the feathers as hair. They also stamped the eggs using the dot markers (my daughter only stamped the back of her egg).
My son’s loves to play Mario Kart. His favorite character is Yoshi so he insisted on making a Yoshi egg after seeing some while browsing Pinterest. I gave him green ink to make thumbprint spots with.
He also used his Super Mario Stickers to decorate an orange egg. These eggs are my favorite since they are ‘so him’ ….. tee, hee!
When I asked my daughter the day before what she wanted to make, she excitedly exclaimed “a princess egg!” To make her princess egg, she glued sparkly things like jewel gems and sequins to it.
Since Big Brother made a thumbprint egg, she also had to make one. They always want what the other one has….Lol!
Can you tell her favorite color is pink? Every single egg she made has pink in it!
They kids enjoyed decorating the eggs even though my little guy had the start of the flu and didn’t feel well. I love how creative (and predictable!) both kids were through the whole process.
Challenges are so much fun and I am so excited to join the next #CreativeKidsChallenge! Head on over to Tinkerlab to see what others have linked up or join the challenge.

I love how these turned out. My favorite is the puppy dog. I am so excited that my boys are old enough this year to really start digging in to fun holiday crafts.
Thanks Katy! She would turn everything into a ‘doggie’ if she could…lol 🙂
I love how you laid out the materials creating an exciting invitation to create and decorate eggs. I know my little girl would ask to make a princess egg too! 🙂
