Process Art: The Magic of Salt Painting!
Have you tried salt painting before? It’s like magic! He, he. Watching the colors spread is mesmerizing! It creates a beautiful outcome with endless possibilities. This process art activity is great for little ones yet still fun for slightly older. It allows kids to explore creatively. My kids are excited to do this again!
We made this butterfly craft and dragonfly craft as part of our creative preschool bug theme (or not-a-bug, technically!). We shared a way too cute alphabet snail craft and a spider web lacing activity that involves math.
One of my favorite salt paintings that I have stumbled across is this gorgeous rainbow-colored ‘LOVE’ sign from You Clever Monkey.
Butterfly and Dragonfly Salt Painting Art Projects
Supplies Needed:
- white glue (such as Elmer’s school glue)
- watered down paint (or use food coloring)
- paintbrushes or squeeze droppers
- salt
- cardstock or somewhat thick paper
- Butterfly Template
- Dragonfly Template
Print the templates or create your own design. My preschooler also made a scribble design on colored construction paper.
Paint glue to cover the entire butterfly/dragonfly design. Shake salt over until all the glue is covered.
Use the paintbrushes to drip paint (or colored water) in different areas. Watch as the paint spreads like magic! Repeat with other colors. It’s fun to watch the colors blend together.

Love the salt it’s enjoyable with the toddlers
Do you need to let the salt and glue dry prior to painting?
Do you let the glue/salt dry before applying color??
Hi, I don’t think it matters. We let our dry for a little bit 🙂
